The outbreak is caused by a virus, known, but no longer known, as SS-5. The virus, when reaching the brain, infects it, and causes decay, which gives a chemical trigger to awaken parasites called 'Puppet Masters.'
Each zombie is a miniature hive-mind. The over-mind is located in the brain with each muscle being controlled by the over-mind. The parasite leaves its eggs in the mouth and salivary glands of the infected.
The parasites are called Puppet Masters due to the fact that they are just that. The human body becomes nothing but a puppet for the parasite to control, in order to spread its eggs, and SS-5.
Now, of course, the Puppet Masters aren't the only way to become infected, but we'll get to that later.
Zombies don't stop for anything. They don't feel pain, and as long as their brain is intact, they will keep coming. Noise will always attract a zombie. Especially high pitched sounds, like bells and guitars.
Behavior
All zombies are hazardous to human life. Their only instinct is to feed relentlessly on living organisms. They do not feed to satisfy hunger, and even specimens who have been completely disemboweled will still desire to feed, as long as brain function is present.
While most of the personality of the original victim is gone, there have been instances of the zombies seemingly recalling memories of their past lives and performing familiar tasks.
Although seemingly incapable of reason, zombies have been shown to be able to learn through a process of trial and error. There have been random cases of zombies actually using firearms in a limited capacity, and blunt objects as well. The full extent of the creature's learning abilities is unknown, but the process of discovery for them is not unlike that of a toddler.
A reanimated corpse will attack any and all living humans in its immediate vicinity, regardless of past ties to said individuals. So don't try to reason with it.
How's that? Zombies not only trying to eat you, but trying to bash you over the head with your own bat as well.
What a fine world we live in...
Evolution
That's right, zombies are evolving.
Well, not the zombies themselves, but the virus and the parasites that create them.
Let me explain.
SS-5 is considered a virus because that's what it was created as. A virus. It was one of the only methods to deliver the super soldier serum to the DNA of the test subjects in relative safety. The only other way was through the parasite, which we now know to be the "Puppet Masters". Of course, when most of the test subjects died, a few of the scientists decided to try to throw both delivery methods at each other and see what happened.
The results were, at the time, phenomenal, because it seemed like both the virus and the parasite stabilized each other and allowed for muscular and skeletal enhancement and restructuring on a genetic level. It was a break through for science (at least when the confidentiality of the project wore off).
Of course, after reanimation, the virus and the parasite changed. While they worked best while together, they had adapted enough to be effective on their own.
So, by now, it doesn't really matter how you get infected, either by blood or by bite, you're still as fucked as new meat in a maximum security prison.
